Introduction to Microneedles
Soluble microneedle
It is a novel transdermal drug delivery technology consisting of a matrix composed of hundreds of needle-like projections, each 3–10 micrometers in diameter and 250–700 micrometers in length, with inter‑needle spacing of 500–800 micrometers. The underlying principle involves formulating macromolecular drugs or bioactive ingredients into micron‑scale needle‑like structures. Upon application to the skin, these structures create numerous microscopic transport pathways through the epidermis, enabling the drug to bypass the stratum corneum barrier and deliver directly to the deeper dermal tissues or the lymphatic system, thereby achieving rapid drug delivery and absorption.

After applying a methylene blue–labeled microneedle patch for 20 minutes, skin changes at the application site were observed; the blue color was markedly reduced after 1 hour and nearly completely disappeared by 3 hours. By 12 hours, the skin had largely returned to its baseline appearance.
